Sam Altman returns to OpenAI's open letter: Welcome to the new journey of building beneficial AGI

I will return to OpenAI, as CEO. Mira will return to the role of CTO. The new initial board of directors will consist of Bret Taylor (Chairman), Larry Summers and Adam D'Angelo.

I've never been more excited about the future. I'm so grateful for everyone's hard work in an uncertain and unprecedented situation, and I believe our resilience and spirit are what make us stand out in our industry. I feel very, very good about our likelihood of succeeding in our mission.

Before I get started, I would like to express some thanks.

I love and respect Ilya, and I consider him a guiding light in the field and a treasure of humanity. I have zero ill will toward him. While Ilya will no longer serve on the board, we hope to continue our working relationship and are discussing how he can continue to serve on the OpenAI work.

We have three priorities.

Advancing our research initiatives and further investing in our full stackSafetywork, which has always been critical to our work. Our research roadmap is clear; this is a time of intense focus. I share your excitement; we will turn this crisis into an opportunity! I will work with Mira to solve this problem.

Continue to improve and deploy our products and serve our customers. It is important that people experience the benefits and promise of AI and have the opportunity to shape it. We continue to believe that great products are the best way to achieve this. Working with Brad, Jason, and Anna, I will ensure that our unwavering commitment to users, customers, partners, and governments around the world is clear.

Brett, Larry, and Adam will work very hard on the extremely important task of building a board with diverse perspectives, improving our governance structure, and overseeing an independent review of recent events. I look forward to working closely with them on these critical steps so that everyone can have confidence in the stability of OpenAI.
