There are still many misconceptions about NFTs. For example, this week Elon Musk said that all NFTs are “off-chain”, when in fact many NFTs are completely on-chain.
Another common misconception is that NFTs are more or less just static images.
That’s definitely not true! In fact, some of my favorite NFTs are ones that evolve or can evolve in some form or fashion over time.
In today’s article, let’s do a little review and highlight some well-known dynamic NFTs with a time dimension.
1) Lifeforms
Created by artist and software developer Sarah Friend, Lifeforms are “NFT-based entities” on Polygon that require “regular care to keep them thriving.” In other words, you must remove a Lifeform from your account within 90 days of receiving it.wallettransfer, otherwise it will be destroyed.
Today, there are only 50 or so of these entities left. Lifeforms has been shortlisted for the Lumen Prize in 2022, with the series described as follows:
“By introducing unexpected dynamics into smart contract systems, Lifeforms subverts the typical logic of NFTs, which is to buy, hold, and hope that their value increases, and instead requires the ‘owner’ to become a caretaker or caregiver who must constantly maintain or care for their NFTs, working in partnership with others.”
2) Chaos Roads
Created by artist, curator, data scientist, and NFT historian Chainleft, Chaos Roads is an art collection that runs entirely on-chain, including art, music, and poetry, all generated by the project's code plus the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).
Notably, within this architecture, there is a system of “Entropy” encoded that allows the owner of an NFT to go back to one of its earlier visual states. Thus, not only does the work of this project physically evolve with each Ethereum block, but it can also return to an earlier aesthetic evolution over time. This is an early example of the dynamism of art leveraging the always-on Ethereum.
3) Corruption(s*)
Developed by dom, the main creator behind Blitmap, Loot, and Sup, Corruption(s*) is a fully on-chain generative ASCII crypto art project that launched in secret in November 2021.
This series is notable because it innovates an evolving insight system on the chain. The system involves each NFT having an insight feature, which accumulates insight experience over time, thus evolving the aesthetics of the work. If the Corruption remains untransferred, the accumulation speed will be faster, and it will slow down when it is "unstable" or transferred.
4) Etholvants
First released in October 2021, Etholvants is another experiment entirely on-chain that aims to grow single-celled digital organisms by either grouping them together or staking NFTs. The latter method saw these organisms “grow 2 cells every 4 hours,” but hundreds have merged, so that only a little over 8,400 Etholvants exist today.
5) Fini
Fini is “using oracles to respond tocryptocurrencyActivity NFTs with fluctuating value.”
In other words, the mood of a particular Fini is constantly changing over the hour, day, or week schedule through thecryptocurrencyThis can be Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, Dogecoin, Polygon, Chainlink, Uniswap, BNB Chain, Avalanche or Tezos, among others.
While I personally think of the entire series as one giant dynamic concept art project, Fini's characters themselves are also iconic and lovable PFPs, making it easy to track down your favoriteTokenThe price action of the market provides a very fascinating path.
6) SALT
SALT is a photographic crypto art series created by artists 0xmons and Figure, featuring dynamic rendering, which means that itsTokenThe aesthetics of the blockchain will evolve based on changes in the state of the chain.
In practice this means that every day there is a continuous cycle fromTokenTo another token asynchronously loops through the series of 180 photos. The creators previously explained that “no owner owns a specific image, all images are shared collectively.”
7) Terraforms
Terraforms by Mathcastles has many unique aspects that cannot be simply explained in one sentence. In short, the series is a huge runtime artwork that exists as a virtual world completely on-chain.
Still, one of the most interesting aspects of Terraforms to me is its temporal nature. The series of NFTs has two main modes, “Terrain” and “Daydreaming,” the latter of which helps delay or completely prevent the hard-coded destruction of the virtual world.
8) Uniswap LP NFTs
Not all NFTs that can evolve over time belong to cultural sectors. In DeFi, the most obvious example is the liquidity provider (LP) positions in Uniswap V3, all of which are represented by specific NFTs that pull data from Ethereum and continuously present that data. If you change the liquidity of a position, your NFT will automatically reflect this change.
