Layer2 competition is fierce, how can Arbitrum continue to break through?

How will the Layer2 track change in the future?

Author | VernacularBlockchain

This year, Ethereum L2 It has experienced explosive growth, just like the previous public chain explosion, and a large number of project parties have begun to deploy the Layer2 track. As a capacity expansion player in the Optimistic Rollup track, Arbitrum gradually stood out with the Airdrop event in February this year.

We interviewed the team behind ArbitrumNina, Head of Offchain Labs Asia Pacific, Jason, Engineer of Offchain Labs Asia Pacific, and Arbitrum Foundation ChineseCommunityShin, listen to them talk about how Arbitrum copes with the fierce competition from a number of latecomers in the Layer2 track, and their views on the future evolution of the entire Layer2 landscape.

1. As the leader in the Layer2 track, what does the Arbitrum team think of Layer2 in Ethereum andBlockchainWhat are the evolutions in the ecosystem and the impact on the entire crypto industry?

Offchain Labs:The existence of Layer2 is to ensureSafetyArbitrum aims to expand Ethereum under the premise of maintaining decentralization, so when the first version was launched, it already had a complete fraud proof. After that, Offchain labs updated its technology stack products many times, bringing nitro, stylus and bold.

In addition, for developers, most Layer2s use EVM, so they can well meet the expansion needs of Layer1 projects. Developers can easily use the original tools to deploy products to Layer2 without making any code modifications. For users, Layer2 has much lower gas costs than Layer1 and extremely fast transaction confirmation, allowing users toweb3Experience the user experience of web2 in the product. It is conceivable that with the continuous improvement of Layer2 technology in the future, more users and developers will enter the Layer2 ecosystem.

2. We see that the competition in the Layer2 track is very fierce. ZkSync, Starknet, etc. are expected to bring rapid growth in user volume and TVL due to Airdrop expectations.Xiaobai NavigationAs a latecomer, Base chain has emerged as a dark horse with the resource advantages of Coinbase and other companies. So how does Arbitrum cope with the increasingly competitive Layer2 market?

Offchain Labs:If you want to have a billion users, you must first have a million developers. If Stylus, the new technology stack developed by Offchain Labs for Arbitrum, isDAOVoting allows developers to deploy programs developed in Rust, C, and C++ on Arbitrum. It is estimated that there are 3 million Rust developers and 12 million C++ developers on the network.Through Stylus, Arbitrum can open up a new door for the Ethereum ecosystem beyond the existing 20,000 Solidity developers.

Before this, the EVM and wasm of other public chains did not share the same state, so new wasm developers could not interact with the existing EVM ecosystem. The introduction of Stylus (EVM+) broke this limitation. EVM developers and WASM developers will be able to build together on the same ecosystem without being restricted by the ecosystem.

3. The Arbitrum team recently launched a very important technology stack, Stylus. Can we understand that Stylus is a killer weapon launched to cope with the current fierce competition in the track? What impact may it have on the entire track?

Offchain Labs:As answered in the previous question, we expect more Web2 developers to enter the Web3 industry. The above three languages far exceed Solidity in terms of the number of developers and tools. Therefore, for existing Web3 developers, developers cancontractAdd wasm tocontractLibraries written in wasmcontractIt is also easy to interact with solidity contracts, and even rewrite and upgrade the original solidity contracts, making the contracts run more efficiently and at a lower cost, which will further reduce user expenses and improveBlockchainperformance and give rise to more application innovations.

4. Currently, the Arbitrum ecosystem can be said to be the most mature and richest ecosystem in the entire Layer2 track, but Base and other ecosystems have also recently emerged with some very hot projects. The bear market is more of a game between stocks. So, what do you think about the competition between Layer2 project ecosystems? What new actions may Arbitrum have in the future?

Offchain Labs:I think competition in this space is healthy and beneficial to users. We don’t mind competition, and we also believe that Arbitrum has the best technology and Ethereum scaling solutions.

Offchain Labs will continue to advance with Arbitrum, providing users and developers with the best technology and products, giving them the confidence to always choose Arbitrum. Now we have launched the Stylus testnet and the Orbit testnet deployment. In the future, we will continue to pay attention to user feedback on the testnet and provide users with the best user experience when the mainnet is launched. In addition, we are also studying the decentralization of the sequencer. In the near future, we will provide a detailed plan.

5. The launch and development of high-quality native projects are extremely important to the Layer2 ecosystem. If you review it, what do you think is the reason why Arbitrum can produce a native project as popular as GMX? Do you think there are replicable points in this path?

Offchain Labs:Arbitrum has one of the most powerful DeFi ecosystems besides Ethereum. Many innovative and high-quality projects choose to deploy on Arbitrum because Arbitrum has a strongCommunityAnd other projects they want to work on and collaborate with. In addition, projects on Arbitrum andCommunityThey are all very willing to cooperate with each other to build a good ecosystem and products. At the same time, we also pay great attention to developers, and we are constantly improving developer tools. For example, we provide a complete Arbitrum Tutorial for new community projects. The Arbitrum SDK is provided for developers who are already developing on Arbitrum. This will reduce the extra workload for developers in Layer2 development and make it easier for developers to get started.

6. Currently, major Layer 2 projects have launched Layer 3, and Arbitrum is no exception. What do you think about the prospects and development of Layer 3?

Offchain Labs:Arbitrum has also launched its own Orbit Chains (L3). Orbit Chains not only has low fees and low latency, but can also be customized in terms of gas and privacy. When using Orbit, users can choose to use Rollups or Anytrust mode, and can also choose Arbitrum One or Arbitrum Nova as their DA chain. For gas tokens, users can also customizeethOrbit will be able to choose whether to upgrade any future technology stack upgrades of Arbitrum. We believe that in certain areas, the development of Layer3 may even surpass that of many Layer2s.

7. Previously, many people believed that Zk-rollup was the best solution for Layer 2. What do you think?

Offchain Labs:Zk-rollups can rely onZero knowledge proofIt can achieve short finalization time, but due to its huge proof computing overhead and performance bottleneck, ZK-rollups will be weaker than Optimistic rollups in terms of performance and cost, at least for now. We want to bring users technical solutions that meet current market needs, and Optimistic rollup is the solution that best meets market needs at the moment. Arbitrum's technology has been evolving, and we have been researching cutting-edge technologies in the ZK field. When ZK technology matures, perhaps we will also integrate this technology into our product line.

8. Finally, can you share Arbitrum’s future development path and vision?

Offchain Labs:Offchain Labs will continue to advance the technology for Arbitrum. The most recent focus is to launch the official version of Stylus, the online permissionless validator version (BOLD developed by Offchain labs), and the decentralized Sequencer, providing users with a high-performance andSafetyOf course, these all need to be passedDAOIt can only be adopted on Arbitrum if voted on.

In addition, the Arbitrum Foundation launched two programs some time ago: a grant program and a student ambassador program. The grant program will provide grants to different categories of projects/organizations in the Arbitrum ecosystem in stages. The current stage is for dapps and infrastructure being developed on the Arbitrum chain. The Student Ambassador Program aims to empower students to represent Arbitrum in their universities and local communities while also building their own personal visibility and influence.

In the near future, the Foundation will also launch a new phase of the Ambassador Program, open to non-student communities and technical personnel.

Whether now or in the future, we are very much looking forward to seeing more friends in Greater China actively participate in these plans!
