USV 谈 AI 美学

The word "technology" comes from the Greek word techne, which refers to an art, skill or practice. Plato wrote extensively about this concept, often mentioning artists such as flutists as prime examples of those working in technique. Although today we tend to contrast technology and the arts (such as STEM versus the humanities), classical thinkers believed they were inextricably intertwined. In order to understand this connection, one must realize that art is not and cannot be a mere expression of self. More importantly, art is always expressed and delivered through the medium of the tools we use to communicate, and the nature of these tools is determined by the technological level of the time.

Technology companies of the past 25 years, such as Netflix, YouTube and TikTok, may seem like just new media distribution channels. This is thinkingXiaobai NavigationThey're the wrong way around. New technology unlocks entirely new arts. By changing the medium through which we can express ourselves, they have changed the terms of who can create art and what constitutes a work of art. Streaming has changed the rhythm of television programming, as viewers now tend to binge-watch content rather than binge it over weeks and months. What’s even more dramatic is that if you showed someone a Mr. Beast YouTube video or Savanah Moss’ TikTok 25 years ago, they probably wouldn’t even have a conceptual framework to understand what they were looking at.

Artificial intelligence may be the most important technology of our time, and like previous technological revolutions, it will change our relationship with art, such as how we create art, what kind of art we create, and even what we consider art .

First, we’ve seen AI lower the barriers to artistic creation. On my personal blog, I now add custom images to every new post, which I wouldn't be able to do at all without the image mockup. Runway enabled USV's OG Matt to create a great trailer. Music apps like Splice and Suno mean that people without musical training can easily express themselves through song, not just through curation but composition. If the iPhone means that anyone can capture reality with a camera in their pocket, then artificial intelligence means that anyone can depict and interpret reality in any medium of their choice.

Artificial intelligence will also unlock entirely new types of art. Plots is creating a new way of telling stories, one based on characters where humans determine the direction of the story. AI Chatbot. One of our investments, Bright Moments, has developed a "dream machine" that continuously generates new images based on images it has previously proposed and voice prompts from the user (or should I say creator? Or consumer?). The USV office installed one and we had so much fun doing it! The defining characteristics of these new AI mediums are interactivity and randomness, perhaps to the extent that we typically associate them with games. Humans provide visions, surprise and delight at what is summoned, and in turn respond with new prompts that further expand the boundaries of the game.

Perhaps most interestingly, we'll see artistic creation primarily inspired by the AI prompts themselves (i.e. rather than more manual human prompts). There is a fine line between this third category of works and the second category, but works like Nothing Forever and AI Projects like Tube feel more like they are driven by AI than implemented by AI. If YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok reflect the most profound parts of human experience by showing the most mundane details of a person’s life, are we learning from the more unconstrained self-expression training process with AI that we are not A self-aware self? What happens when "illusion as a feature, not a bug" is taken to the ultimate point of art?

I'm excited about these new approaches to art. They'll be weird, just like Rambalac was weird. Or, as Damien Chazelle showed in his masterpiece Babylon, The Wizard of Oz, Jurassic Park and Avatar are all weird from an early Hollywood perspective.

But, how wonderful they are!
